19th Century French Renaissance Flip-Top Dessert Buffet in Stripped Oak is a remarkable variant of the serving buffet attributed to the French.  Long ago marble atop a piece of furniture was considered less than stylish, so this clever design hid a marble top serving surface ~ perfect for serving cheeses and desserts as the stone keeps such items cooler ~ underneath a solid plank oak top with giadrooned edge that matches the remainder of the furniture, and is hinged in the back to open up trunk-like and to be held in place by clever swing-out side supports.  Under the marble appears a brace of flatware and linen drawers, each lavished with full relief carvings of lions' heads which also double as drawer pulls, each flanked by fully laden grapevines and boldly carved rosettes.  Turned, tapered and fluted columns support the drawer tier and define the middle shelf, fitted with pyramidal accents on each corner, and underneath each appears four more columns turned and carved into urn forms which are based on the lower shelf that is surrounded by two tiers of bold molding detail, the latter of which sports a carved repeating acanthus leaf pattern.  An excellent choice for a compact yet stylish dry bar, as well!
