19th Century French Barley Twist Dessert Buffet makes a great accompaniment to any room, and has the added feature of a concealed marble top! Originally intended to adorn the room and opened to serve desserts or cheeses, the top stays open thanks to swing-out supports that also support a shallow shelf latched in place until needed. The entire casework was crafted from old-growth oak, and features a gadrooned top edge overlooking a top tier that consists of two spacious drawers framed with rectangular rosettes and carved with stylized foliates and lions' heads that serve as the drawer pulls. Clockwise & counter-clockwise barley twist columns in front provide support for the top as well as a mid-level and lower shelf, providing three surfaces. The lower shelf is carved with edging complementary to the top. The shallow design ensures it hugs the wall to allow minimal intrusion into the traffic flow of the room. Useful in so many ways, it also speaks to an era when entertaining was of paramount importance to a family's social calendar.
