19th Century French Henri II Marble Top Walnut Commode represents the impeccable melding of neoclassical architecture inspired by the ancient Greeks and Romans, with hand-carved embellishment inspired by the Renaissance around 1500AD. This example is topped with beautifully veined rouge marble with a subtle, rusty brick red coloration fully beveled on three sides. Below appears four drawers, the top most richly carved with a repetitive egg motif in a Greek coin pattern, with the three drawers below more tailored with only shells carved on the sides. Each drawer sports a pair of heavy cast bronze bale pulls for ease of access that is classically styled. The drawers are framed on the corners by 3/4 columns with deep ridges and flutes topped with Doric capitals and an urn pediment carved with foliate motifs. Trimming the entire perimeter of the base is a rectilinear interpretation of the egg in Greek coin motif framed by molded detail, and supported by carved, urn-shaped feet. The combination of the sumptuous French walnut, the hand-cast bronze and hand-beveled marble is truly timeless!
