19th Century French Walnut Louis XV Marble Top End Table reminds us why the French are considered at the top furniture crafters in the world! Sculpting sumptuous French walnut into naturalistic shapes, they created gracefully scrolled cabriole legs and an undulating apron, all hand-carved with shell, floral and foliate motifs with a cross hatching pattern on all four aprons that combines to create an understated elegance. For an opulent visual touch, subtle gold highlights have been hand-painted on the tips of the carvings. The feet are tipped with escargot scrolls and upturned acanthus flourishes pointing to the downward cascading foliates at the top of the shoulders. The framework resembles a violin with an exquisitely veined marble top contoured and beveled to perfection that follows the contours of the framework below. Note the intriguing fossils in the neutral-colored and variegated stone which add visual intrigue.
