Early 19th Century Swedish Painted Commode ~ Chest of Drawers is a timeless example of the craftsmanship and artistry in cabinetmaking for which the Swedes are well known. Their reputation also extends into shipbuilding, as an anecdote, illustrated by the historical display of the Vasa, although the naval architect would not be included in the accolades... This example was designed for copious storage, with deep, wide drawers each accessed with a brace of cast brass pulls and centered with finely cast brass key guards. The ornamentation is very tailored, with recessed chamfered panels on the sides, a subtly scrolled apron, and a mixture of oval and circular molded panels on the drawer facades. The multi-hued painted finish enhances the detail, and with the distressed finish makes for a look that is superb for casual decors.
