18th Century French Louis XVI Period Whitewashed Commode represents the essence of the neoclassical revival in France during the latter half of the 1700s. Utilizing dense, old-growth indigenous white oak, the artisans created a sturdy plank top surrounded by fine molded detail. Under that appears the four spacious drawers, each carved with wheat bordering that provides a framework for delicate foliate sprays and diamond shaped motifs upon which the cast bronze bale pulls and intricately designed key guards are positioned. The drawers are flanked on each side by fluted corner posts with wheat reeding at the bottom, and another tier of horizontal wheat trim across the apron. Pegged mortise & tenon joints are utilized throughout the design, and the hand-hewn planks of the back speak to an era when skill, local materials and techniques handed down from generation to generation were the way such instant family heirlooms were made, one at a time! The lovely hand-applied whitewash finish by our expert in-house staff makes it perfect for blending with today's modern lifestyles!
