18th Century French Louis XVI Period Walnut Commode is a superlative example of the beginnings of the neoclassical revival in Europe that occurred with the transition from Kings Louis XV and Louis XVI.  The casework shows a subtle bowed front and elegant, tailored scrolls incised into the facade, but the jewelry-quality cast bronze drawer pulls and key guards show a decidedly neoclassical theme with ancient Greek and Roman designs being revitalized to the delight of all true cognoscente!  Harvest baskets overflowing with clusters of grapes mingle with grapevines and converge at the center with a crest motif, while a banded wheat design forms the actual grip of the pull.  The key guard also celebrates the harvest, with Greek-style flair surrounding each keyhole.  Although the hardware is quite amazing, it still does not detract from the stunning natural beauty of the hand-select, old-growth French walnut that was employed, using techniques handed down from generation to generation such as pegged mortise & tenon joinery, creating a masterwork of the cabinetmaker's art sure to become an instant family heirloom!
