18th Century French Louis XVI Period Commode ~ Chest of Drawers was considered an essential furnishing of any respectable home, and was often gifted to a newlywed couple who were establishing their new home. This example was just such a piece, with carved lovebirds perched on a harvest basket carved on each end of all three full-width drawers! Diamond forms provide a platform for the embossed brass bale pulls, with wildflower accents in bas relief, and the entire drawer facades bordered in egg & dart, all hand-carved. Cornerposts are fluted and reeded with ripe wheat, with a similar horizontal border across the apron. Note the square-pegged mortise & tenon joinery throughout the design, and even the hand-tooling on the solid planks of the back side. Crafted from seasoned old-growth oak to last for generations, such pieces were designed to become instant family heirlooms!
