19th Century Country French Whitewashed Armoire from Normandie ~ Brittany exhibits characteristics typical of both regions, which are geographically next to each other on the north and western coast of the country. Artisans were of course free to move about the regions carrying their skills and traditions with them, so transitional pieces are common. The rectilinear architecture of the casework, all of which is rendered from old growth indigenous oak, is enhanced by the boldly molded crown and the undulations of the apron below which provide a framework for the bonnet and doors. Carvings appear in profusion on the bonnet, tops of the doors, bottoms of the doors, and on the apron, all of which celebrate the natural flora of the two regions, and include a basket of flowers centered above, with numerous acanthus leaf flourishes, most prominent centered on the apron below. Rounded corner posts and subtly scrolled legs add a nice touch, and the three brass hinges on each door with full length embossed brass key guards are like jewelry on a beautiful lady. A fluted and reeded center stile is attached to the left door, both of which open wide to reveal a cavernous interior with one full size shelf creating two surfaces. An excellent choice for a flat panel TV. Painstakingly whitewashed by our expert in-house staff using our proprietary method that retains visibility of the natural beauty of the old growth oak!
