19th Century Arts & Crafts Rustic Chestnut Coffee Table was hand-made during an intriguing period of European furniture lore. The Arts and Crafts movement was an international trend in the decorative and fine arts that developed earliest and most fully in the British Isles and subsequently spread across the British Empire and to the rest of Europe and America. It was initiated in reaction against the perceived impoverishment of the decorative arts and the conditions in which they were produced, most notably revolting against the use of machines and assembly lines. The movement flourished in Europe and North America between about 1880 and 1920.* Here we see solid planks and posts of richly figured chestnut used to create a relatively large coffee ~ cocktail table, but with notable attention made to the hand-crafting of the joints, including pegged mortise & tenon construction, representing techniques used for centuries on the Continent. The rectilinear lines of the design are also common to the style, which most would agree was the inspiration for many notable architects including Frank Lloyd Wright.
