18th Century Dutch Neoclassical Linen Press ~ Cabinet was created during the waning years of the Louis XVI period and celebrates the timeless beauty and sophistication of the style that originated with the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. This example was designed to hold all a family's finest china, flatware and table linens all in one place, perfect for entertaining. Of course nowadays we can use such a design for so much more! The architecture is arresting, with facing crown molding angled up from the base to create a framework for the stunning sculpture of a fluted urn bursting with flowers and foliage. The crown features fine molding including dentil work, and extends all around the back, passing the corners mitered at 45 degrees along the way. The corners on the top tier are adorned with half-round ebonized columns topped with cast bronze Corinthian capitals with bronze pediments below. The half-columns frame the two upper doors which are adorned with applied ebonized floral and foliate carvings enhancing the framework. The doors open to reveal a combination of shelves and interior drawers perfect for organizing, with hinges mounted to allow the doors to open wide for ease of access. The top tier is situated upon the base which has been designed with three capacious full width drawers, each fitted with its original embossed brass bale pulls with guards and matching keyhole surrounds. Mitered corners frame the drawers, and are lavished with carved, ebonized corbels in continuance of the theme. Tapered and fluted legs provide support. What a magnificent piece for the bedroom, family room, or anywhere a stately reminder of a bygone era that happens to be incredibly useful for storage is desired!
