19th Century French Louis Philippe Period Marble Top Center Table recalls an intriguing period in history when styles returned to architecture inspired by the classic Greek and Roman civilizations, and restoration of the grandeur of the past.  Louis Philippe's reign, who most believe responsible for preventing Versailles from deteriorating beyond repair, was also a period when furnishings took a decided turn towards tailored lines yet opulent appearance thanks to such available materials as exotic imported mahogany and black marble from the quarries in what is today called Belgium.  This example boasts a faceted urn form for the single pedestal, and three gracefully scrolled legs forming a base supported by three lion's paw feet.  The richness of the mahogany is also displayed in the tailored apron design, leading the eye to the black marble top that shows fossilized sea creatures in its makeup, and has been grooved with a subtle lip all around to catch errant water from fresh flowers displayed on the top, the most common application of such exquisite tables gracing the entryways of affluent homes.
