Antique Letter EngravingWell, the summer heat has not slowed us down!  We have been working hard in Baton Rouge, unpacking & uncrating yet another beautiful shipment of our latest European discoveries (we had lots of crates on this container filled with art, mirrors,  lighting and more!).  It takes days to unpack and set up such a huge shipment of these amazing original antique finds from Europe.  As I promised in my last blog, below are some photos of our grand efforts, showing you a few of the lovely and enchanting items we have just received.  There are so many rare & decorative objects, including timeless antique furniture, charming culinary antiques, elegant Old Paris tea sets ~ with each piece having its own unique story and immeasurable charm.

Antique French Furniture and AccessoriesThis container has an astonishing amount of antique art; antique pewter, antique copper, antique clocks, antique lighting and other gorgeous antique accessories.  Of course, we always try to find beautiful antique furniture, which is never an easy task.  Sometimes it seems like finding needles in a haystack.  This is why we travel many thousands of miles for weeks on end to gather and bring these great keepsakes and wonderful discoveries back to our stores.

This shipment also has a marvelous selection of Provençal 18th and 19th century buffets, armoires and commodes, all with a wonderfully warm and rustic patina ~ making them abundant in Country French charm.

Antique Furniture and Accessories

I think the star of the shipment has to be a truly amazing neoclassical bedroom set inspired by the elegant style invented during the reign of Louis XVI (1775-1793) from Paris by master ébéniste François Linke, considered one of the finest furniture makers and braziers of the 19th century.  The detail is astounding and worthy of anyone’s admiration.  It is truly a remarkable find and one of the best examples of fine artistry from the Beaux Artes period.  Superb!

Antique Letter EngravingAfter months of anticipation, June has arrived!  We started out the month with an exciting antiques shipment that has just been unloaded in Dallas.  We spent all last week unpacking crates and boxes, assembling armoires, setting up buffets and positioning bookcases.  So many great new items arrived that we felt it was a good idea to give you a glimpse of our Dallas warehouse, where everything was received, assembled and displayed.

Antiques: Before and After ~ Turning Gold into Silver.

Antique Letter EngravingThere is no question that styles come and go. What was in vogue a decade ago is many times totally abandoned by those that follow trendy styles. Antique styles temporarily go in and out of favor. Even types of finishes get repainted and covered by more the trendy hues. I remember in the eighties when natural wood finishes were all the rage. We stripped painted pieces to reveal the natural wood underneath. Today painted and white-washed shades are back in style, plus silver and pewter tones have returned into prominence among the trendy.

On a recent buying trip I came across a particular painting that caught my eye. It was sitting on the floor of a warehouse ~ almost asking me to be rescued. The canvas had an intriguingly vibrant seascape (which is one of John’s favorite subjects). Unfortunately the frame appeared to be beyond hope ~ painted over in globs of gold and void of any ornament or carving. However, I liked the canvas and after acquiring it from the dealer the painting arrived in one of our monthly antique shipments.

Antique painting before

As all of our antique paintings undergo a thorough cleaning and restoration before being placed in to the gallery, this painting and the frame was given the usual restoration treatment. As we attempted to clean the frame, the layer of frightening gold paint started to come off, revealing the original antique silver leaf underneath! What a surprise it was! This ugly duckling was transformed into a silver swan.

Antique Painting After

We can only assume that years ago, as silver frames went out of fashion, gold was painted over the silver leaf and buried underneath, the true intentions of the artist (usually the artist would choose the frame for the canvas).

I keep returning to the wall upon which we’ve hung the painting, just to admire it. I so love the way it looks now ~ a truly remarkable transformation, expressing the artist’s original vision and so capably restored by our expert in-house staff!
