19th Century French Louis XIV Painted and Gilded Trumeau Mirror is a splendid example of the Rococo style, and features elaborate bas relief and molded detail highlighted in gold to complement the warm beige patinaed painted finish of the woodwork. The arch-topped mirror is accented with shell and foliate flourishes, which complement the exquisite classical pastoral painting above, rendered in a subdued pastel coloration that almost lends a sepia effect. The scene depicts a fisherman and families washing clothes next to a cascading waterfall surrounded by lush vegetation with architectural ruins providing visual intrigue. The Rococo motifs are represented by stylized shell and foliate motifs in both symmetrical and asymmetrical designs enhanced with the gold highlighting.
Circa 1890s
