Pair Antique Spelter Statues of Provincial Couple are the French equivalent of Grant Wood's American Gothic, with a handsome French country couple in modest garments depicted in their homestead environment.  The male figure is holding what appears to be a lantern, while the female figure is holding a broad bladed shovel, indicating who in the family does the real work!  Set upon Napoleon III inspired bases with egg and crest motifs, each has been given a gold finish which has achieved a lovely patina over the decades.
