19th Century Napoleon III Period Louis XIV Style Canape ~ Sofa is a superlative example of the revival of timeless French style and flair that occurred during the reign of France's last monarch. Combining style elements that were popular during the Louis XIII and primarily the Louis XIV period, this sofa exhibits a particular mastery of wood sculpture that can be appreciated from any angle.. The Louis XIII influence comes from the clockwise and counter-clockwise barley twist framework including the legs, stretchers, uprights and even the armrest supports. The tips of the armrests feature orb forms carved with shells. The seatback, however, steals the show with a majestic arched crown festooned with an heraldic crest at the center flanked by olive branches and acanthus plumes extending all the way to the sides. Below the crown is a masterwork of stylized shell, foliate and scrollwork designs intertwined into three sections, held aloft by a mirror image of the crown above. Upholstery is in surprisingly good condition, but the springs and inner supports require replacement.
