Framed Oil Painting on Panel by Marthe de Spiegeleir (1897-1991) is a splendid post-impressionist work depicting a charming country cottage on a late afternoon. The presence of an untended garden and a thatch roof that is in need of repair indicate the home was probably abandoned by the time the artist discovered and was inspired by it. De Spiegeleir was a prolific artist who lived to age 94, and in her full lifetime was able to capture the essence of rural life in Northern Europe, consisting primarily of landscapes and human interest studies. Her works, such as this one with its original frame, tended to be smaller in size, although this example is somewhat larger. Note her mastery of muted light and exploration of a broad palette surrounding basic earth tones and a myriad shades of gray.
Circa mid-1900s
