Framed Oil Painting on Panel by Marthe de Spiegeleir (1897-1991) is a wonderful post-impressionist work depicting a quaint country village illuminated by a full moon behind overcast skies. One can imagine a hunter returning from the day ready to rest, relax and have some dinner coming upon this most welcome sight. De Spiegeleir was a prolific artist who lived to age 94, and in her full lifetime was able to capture the essence of rural life in Northern Europe, consisting primarily of landscapes and human interest studies. Her works, such as this one with its original frame, tended to be smaller in size, making them ideal for groupings or accents for cozy spaces. Note her mastery of muted light and exploration of a broad palette surrounding basic earth tones and a myriad shades of gray.
Circa mid-1900s
