Location: Baton Rouge
Early 19th Century Framed Lithograph of a work by Sebastian Munster (1488-1522) is a new printing using the original woodcut dating to the 16th century and was, interestingly enough, printed on the back of paper that had already been inscribed with pen and ink (on the other side), which can just be seen in the unpainted areas above the landscape! The crests of the King of Belgium and Liege are prominent, and appear adjacent to an as-yet unidentified crest. After the lithograph was made, it was hand-colored then eventually framed, and this example has been recently resealed and is ready to hang.
Circa 1830s
Measures 10H x 11W
The original woodcut by Munster was engraved in 1592 and published by Petri in Basel, Switzerland. It was only included in posthumous editions of Munster's Cosmographia between 1592 and 1628.
