SaleAntique Oil Painting On Board depicts a humble shoemaker's shop. Called a cobbler in Europe after the 13th century, such tradesmen usually worked in one-man shops and serviced either villages or city neighborhoods. Shoes were fitted by hand and custom cut and sewn, and as a result were comparatively expensive. Here the shoemaker is at work taking measurements of a customer's calf and foot for her fitting, as a young apprentice watches the procedure. Note the artist's attention to the detail not only of the subjects in the painting, but the disorderly surroundings in what should be considered a busy shop.
