Antique Oil Painting on Board by H. G. Ontrop (1880-1955) is an intriguing example of the artist's work examining an interesting architectural detail of a local village where an arched masonry passageway has been created to facilitate foot traffic in the street plan. A statue of a saint appears in a niche above, usually the patron saint of that particular village. Ontrop has chosen cool colors to reflect the shaded niche of the village tucked away in a corner most visitors may not see, with hints of the sun-kissed terra cotta roofs of the dwellings just visible through the archway at the center of the work.
Circa mid-1900s
