Antique Framed Oil Painting on Canvas by Ludovic Janssen (1888-1954) is an unusual work being a landscape in a square format. Janssen has used the emerging spring growth of the forest canopy to create a focal interest in the composition, set upon a swamp's edge in the lowlands of the Campine region. He informally entitled the work Mars ~ French for March. An amazing depiction of a cloudy sky is also quite captivating. Survives in its original frame.
Ludovic Janssen studied at the École Supérieure des arts Saint-Luc de Liège for two years, from which he graduated with first prizes, then represented himself at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Liège. Janssen received the honorary title of Painter of the Campine, and was knighted in the Order of the Crown in April 1927. He also served as a professor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Liège, and as head of the Atelier Libre in 1941. During his career he enjoyed fame across Europe and exhibited in almost every notable venue of the times. His works still hang in many state buildings and fine homes particularly in Belgium and France.
