Antique Framed Oil Painting on Canvas by Georges De Sloovere (1873-1970) is a classic scene from the ancient city of Bruges in Belgium showing the charming architecture melded with the storied canals surrounded by lush vegetation.  Painted on a relatively rare clear day, the artist's colors are vividly realistic, and the textures impart a lifelike quality to the scene.  The city of Bruges formally dates back to the 9th century, although the site was settled in the Bronze Age.  Its name originated for the Old Dutch word for bridges of which there are many in the environs crossing its dozens of canals.  Its charm and architectural intrigue have inspired artists from around the world for many centuries.  De Sloovere was a celebrated painter and native of Bruges.  He was a student at both the Academies of Fine Arts in Bruges and Brussels from 1888-1901). He is well known for his portraits, figures and landscapes.  Ascribing to the neo-impressionist movement, a genre he preferred was landscapes that focus on large tree trunks.  He was a member of the National Association of Painters and Sculptors of Belgium. In 1918 he became a teacher at the Academy in Bruges. He remained in that position until 1925. One of his students was Gustaaf Buffel. On 3 December 1921 he married Leona Jansseune. They had 2 daughters, Odrada (°Bruges 1923) and Monica (Bruges 1927-1937). He lived in Bruges until 1928, after which he moved to the house De Pelikaan, Moerkerkse Steenweg 388 in Sint-Kruis for which he commissioned the famous architect Firmin Koentges. The painter's studio was situated in the right-hand part of the floor. His works have been displayed in the Museums of Bruges, Groeningemuseum: "Women cleaning copper", "Tree landscape" and City Hall: Portrait of Bruges mayor Victor Van Hoestenberghe.
