Antique Framed Oil Painting on Board by J S Burnet depicts an elegant manoir in the forest, most likely a hunting lodge or second home for an affluent family.  Such homes were opulent in their own right, and represented a way for the family to escape the hustle and bustle of the urban environment.  Utilizing a gray palette, the artist has depicted an early winter scene in the late afternoon with intriguing use of shadows, emphasizing the strong architecture with heavy brush and spatula strokes on the board.  Survives in its original hand-carved gold-painted frame which adds just the right amount of patinaed color to set the work off.
