Antique Framed Oil Painting on Board by Dieudonné Jacobs (1887-1967) is a splendid rendition of a stunning vista at dusk during the early fall season in the region around the Ardennes.  Here Jacobs has used deft brush strokes to indicate movement from the constant breezes in the area, with a misty haze over the rolling hillside in the background.  Survives in its original frame.
Dieudonné Jacobs (1887-1967) was a Belgian post-impressionist who specialized in historic painting, portraits, and landscapes.  Beginning his career with portraits, he studied under Adrien de Witte, Auguste Donnay and Évariste Carpentier at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Liège and earned a scholarship but his education was cut short by World War I.  Serving as a soldier, he was wounded in battle and taken prisoner.  At the end of the war, he was given the Knight of the Order of Leopold cross and the Knight of the Legion of Honour medal.  Jacobs was awarded a study grant to Rome in 1925 and remained there until 1930, replicating the style of Italy’s great painters. He was commissioned to paint the portrait of Pope Pius XI in 1925 and would later go on to produce paintings for St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican and participate in the renovation of the Sistine Chapel.  After 1930, Jacobs split his time between the Belgian Ardennes and the French Riviera. His works appear in many museum collections, including Brussels, Liège, Lyon, Spa, Toulon and The Vatican Museums in Rome.
