Antique Venetian Wall Mirror with Mirrored Frame hails from the region in Europe famously known for its glass works for centuries. This example continues the traditions with a pleasingly contoured framework set at a slight angle out from the main reflecting surface, and adorned with cut floral and foliate patterns all around. The framework has also been given a rose~copper tint for added visual appeal. The cut patterns required the same techniques as cutting crystal, and were a natural outgrowth of the burgeoning industry in the region, especially centered on the island of Murano. During the 15th century, Murano glassmakers created cristallo—which was almost transparent and considered the finest glass in the world. They later became Europe's finest makers of mirrors.
