19th Century French Louis XV Gilded Mirror recalls a period of grand style at the beginnings of the Belle Epoque. Meticulously hand-crafted, it features the naturalistic and asymmetrical style popularized by the Rococo movement which was embraced by the grandson of The Sun King, namely Louis XV. Note the forms of acanthus plumes, cresting and crashing waves, and even the hint of shell. The amazing centerpiece on top even has openings in the design allowing the wall behind to show through. Note the tendrils on either side that appear to come out from behind the frame molding, and return back. What wonderful detail! The design includes foliates and floral sprays cascading around the rounded shoulders, leading the eye down to the base where acanthus plumes and shells reach up from below. The frame was finally lavished with gold leaf, with evidences still in abundance. Original silvering on the mirror shows quite a few signs of age, which is desirable to aficionados of the genre.
Circa 1880s
