19th Century French Renaissance Revival Desk is a magnificent example of master cabinetmaking by French artisans from the 1850s to the end of the century.  Utilizing hand-select old-growth oak, the artisans fashioned a solid plank top with mitered corners, and a double beveled edge all around with cove over acanthus gadrooning.  The apron immediately below is carved all around with bold foliate scrolls, interrupted by lions' heads on the corners, and at the centers of each side for a total of eight full relief lions' heads!  Underneath the corners are carvings with acanthus corbels and finely carved pendant finials.  Two drawers are cleverly concealed on the sides, accessible by pulling on the lions' heads.  A drapery trim style border finishes the bottom of the apron on the long sides, while on the short sides, the apron becomes arched colonnades carved with heraldic crests transitioning to the four massive urn pedestal style legs, each carved all around with fanciful relief.  The pedestals are mounted upon an elaborately styled but classic "H" structure, consisting of boldly scrolled legs festooned with acathus plumes and floral sprays, centered with a norseman's face.  Behind the norsemen is a boldly carved trestle centered on the design providing elegant stability with a flourish!  Because it's completely finished all around it can be placed anywhere in the room, where it can immediately be impressing your guests and family, as well as providing a source of pride that only a masterwork like this can accomplish!
