19th Century French Louis XIV Giltwood Console with Carrara Marble Top is a definitive representation of the style that developed during the reign of the Sun King, Louis XIV himself! One cannot help but be immediately drawn to the carefully contoured and beveled Carrara marble top, the stone that was the choice of some of history's greatest sculptors of all time! The casework below follows that same contour, with serpentine side and arbalette form in the main front apron. All three sides were artfully pierce-carved to depict flowers and foliage set upon a classically scrolled framework, with a bold scallop shell at the very front displayed as if it were a family crest. The pair of boldly double-scrolled legs separate the sides from the front, and are themselves lavished with the sculptor's attentions, including another scallop shell transitioning into floral sprays, acanthus flourishes, and on down to the feet which depict escargot scrolls with upturned acanthus fronds. The legs are joined with a gorgeous reverse-bowed, double arched design profusely lavished with yet another scallop shell flanked by floral sprays. All of the woodwork was water gilded which remains in remarkable condition, complete with over a century of patina which only adds the beauty and charm.
