18th Century French Faience Hand-Painted Plate commemorates the Battle of Valmy when Prussian troops attempted to take Paris. A field cannon with cannon balls, spears and a parade drum accompany a boldly represented French flag, with the exhortation "To Arms!" and the date of 1792 clearly placed. The border consists of three lattice panels separated by flowers. The plate was hastily produced, hence the smearing of the original painted embellishment during the glazing and firing process, with a simple X. mark on the back. Such hastily executed souvenir plates remain in high demand due to their relative scarcity today.
