19th Century French Renaissance Triple Bookcase ~ Display Cabinet is a magnificent example of the revival of the Renaissance that occurred in the latter half of the 1800s in Europe, especially in France, especially impressive given the political turmoil that existed in that country for half a century! Rendered from select old-growth oak, it features an amazing crown depicting a globe with compass, maps, telescope and a navigator's compass, flanked by pierce-carved foliates scrolling out to the corners which are fitted with turned finials. A three tier crown molding provides a transition to the bonnet, embellished with three panels corresponding to the three cabinets below, each carved in full relief with amazingly naturalistic fully laden grapevines centered with a crowned norseman. Three generously sized glazed cabinet doors appear under the panels, with each pane of glass fully framed with carved molding, and the entirety flanked on the corners with clockwise and counter-clockwise barley twist columns. The columns are affixed below to the base unit which features bold rosettes separating three surprisingly capacious drawers, each lavished with fanciful lions' heads that serve as drawer pulls, set on a backdrop of fully laden grapevines. Multi-tiered base molding and bun feet provide support. The real visual treat, however, comes from the rich relief sculpture on the lower panels of the aforementioned doors. On the left door we see an artist's palette and paint brushes atop a scroll of paper and laurel sprays. On the right, a lyre atop a scrolled music score, suspended with ribbon and on a backdrop of laurel sprays. In the center, an Ionic capital fragment symbolizing architecture, with tools, scrolled paper and laurel sprays, all suspended by ribbon tied in a bow. Doors open wide to reveal four surfaces total with three adjustable shelves to accommodate your library or collection.
