18th Century Country French Louis XVI Period Bookcase in Stripped Oak is a strong testament to the cabinetmaking and wood sculpting talents of the 1700s even in the more rural areas of France! Hand-crafted from dense, old-growth oak seasoned for years to make furniture that literally lasts for centuries, it features a neoclassical design inspired by the architecture of ancient Greece and Rome. A variation on dentil molding spans the crown all around, expressed in a repeating demilune half-rosette pattern. The bonnet boasts bas relief work of laurel sprays flanked by rosettes, which in turn appear over the corners lavished with complementary carving. Bead and dash bordering outlines all the carved detail, while the side panels consist solely of hand-chamfered panels. Brass hinges support the doors which are glazed on top for viewing one's books or collection, and accessed with pull keys that insert through cast brass key guards. A pair of visually stunning baskets with ribbon and laurels with berries grace each lower panel, each of which serves to provide more discreet storage at the bottom. Doors open wide to reveal original shelves on adjustable brackets to provide a variety of configurations for your particular needs!
