19th Century Country French Regence Vitrine ~ Curio Cabinet is an interesting blend of styles not uncommon in those produced in the provinces, and in this case a blending of Louis XV Rococo styling at the top of the door, and Louis XVI classical symmetry at the bottom! The carved detail is stunning, revealing the artistry of the wood sculptor for all to see. The top of the door frame features naturalistic scrolls embellished with foliates and florals, including a spray that extends above the boundaries of the door frame itself. Contrast that with the lower door panel with its classic Greek urn surrounded by floral and foliates in a mirror image mode, with the entire door edged with dashed molding detail, and intertwined Greek coin just below the glazing, all done by hand. Corners are fluted, and the crown is beautifully molded, with the sides glazed as well meaning interior lighting is unnecessary. Glass shelves and a mirrored "floor" allow maximum ambient light, while providing discreet storage behind the aforementioned lower door panel. Support is provided by tapered and fluted legs.
Circa mid-1800s
